Ferro with a Solid Showing Last Two Tournaments

After a first round exit at the Yarra Valley Classic in what was her first tournament outing of the season, Ferro overturned that poor start by stunning Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open en route its third round.

And she followed it up with another sparkling performance in Lyon where she made it past three opponents to enter the semifinal of that tournament.

This follows a kind of season that Ferro would love to repeat multiple times over. Having begun the 2020 season ranked 63rd in the world, she got modest success in the first half of the season but came back strongly post the pandemic break.

Ferro, who has a first round bye here, played in two clay court tournaments last year, winning her second WTA title by stunning a bunch of star players in Palermo and then made it through to the fourth round of the French Open. At Roland-Garros, she lost Sofia Kenin.

Can Ferro make it past where she had exited from this competition last year?

Zvonareva Wastes No Time on Rodionova

Not that she was expected to spend too much time on her first round match against the struggling Arina Rodionova but Zvonareva would be particularly pleased with the manner in which she came through her opener against her Aussie opponent.

Zvonareva crushed Rodionova 6-1, 6-3, coming through in an hour and 24 minutes to make it to the second round and seal her place against Ferro.

It was a mixed start to the match with both players breaking each other once but once Zvonareva got hold of her rhythm there was no looking back. She raced away from 2-1 in the opening set to win four in a row to wrap it up easily.

The second set saw Rodionova break Zvonareva early and race to a 3-0 lead but yet again, Zvonareva wasted no time in bringing parity into the set before breaking her opponent twice more to ensure there would be no hiccups.

Would this kind of a performance be enough for round two though?

Ferro v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Ferro, who has some of her best results on clay, starts off as a second favourite in this at 11/8. We think she could edge this contest but for a less risky option go for Ferro to win a set.

Tip: Ferro to win a set – Yes: 8/15 (bet365)
