Venus Williams v Zarina Diyas Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the 2015 Cincinnati Open, where Venus Williams defeated Diyas in straight set in what was also a first round match.

Venus 2-2 in 2021

With the withdrawal of Serena Williams from this tournament because of a fitness issue, the onus is now on Venus as she looks to overturn a modest start to the season. Having played in two tournaments in Melbourne before this, Venus won in the first round and lost the second round at both those competitions.

At the Yarra Valley Classic, Venus defeated Arantxa Rus in her opener but then went down to Petra Kvitova in the second round in a fighting two-setter.

She then looked to have made a strong start to the Australian Open as well, with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens but a bad injury during her match against Sara Errani looked to have pushed her back a tad.

While Venus losing the match 6-1, 6-0 was bit of a surprise, what was a bigger issue was the American trying to complete the match despite her inability to move towards the second part of the encounter.

Can the three-time Miami Open winner now kick-start her campaign in a tournament she has typically done well, even when her chips have otherwise been down?

Diyas Showed Good Signs in Australia

Diyas didn’t make the best of starts to the season with a first round loss at the Abu Dhabi Open but since then has improved on her tournament runs in Australian.

She didn’t participate in the Melbourne tune-up competition before the Australian Open, but that didn’t deter her too much as she crashed into the party of both Tamara Zidansek and Bernarda Pera at Melbourne Park.

While Diyas lost to Garbine Muguruza in the third, winning just two games in the end, she came back strongly at the Phillip Island Trophy just after the Australian Open.  Three-set wins against both Christina McHale and Ana Bogdan meant she had reached the third round for the second successive time before an injury put paid to her chances against Bianca Andreescu.

Coincidentally, much like Venus, that match against Andreescu in which she got injured was also the last time she played on the circuit, now looking to make a comeback after overcoming her fitness issues.

Can she put up a fight here?

Venus v Diyas Prediction and Tip

Both players are coming off fitness trouble which makes it a difficult call. We believe Venus could take some time to get going and Diyas could take advantage of that.

Tip: Diyas to win: 11/10 (bet365)
