This year’s Monte-Carlo Masters will be played between April 10 and 16.
The 2020 edition of the Monte-Carlo Masters was to be played from April 13 to 19, but it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was then held as scheduled in 2021.
Despite being a Masters event on the men’s circuit, mandatory participation from the players is not needed (in contrast to other ATP Masters series events). In fact, it’s the only Masters tournament in which mandatory participation is not needed from the players.
The tournament is also the sole Masters tournament on the tour to have such a status and regardless of that, many of the top ranking players still participate in the event every year.
It is played in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France every year. As the name would suggest, the tournament isn’t played in Monte-Carlo but in a commune located just outside of Monaco.

What Happened at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas made it two titles in a row at the Monte-Carlo when he won the 2022 edition by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. He won 6-3, 7-6 (3) to lift the trophy.
Tsitsipas had earlier cruised past the second seeded Alexander Zverev in the semifinal, and defeated Diego Schwartzman in a tough, three-setter in the quarterfinal.
Top seeded Novak Djokovic had a first round bye but was a shock second round loser at the hands of Davidovich Fokina.
In 2021, Stefanos Tsitsipas won the Monte-Carlo Open who beat Andrey Rublev in the final in straight sets.
This was after the top seeded Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the competition by Dan Evans in the third round while Rafael Nadal fell to Rublev in the last eight.
The tournament wasn’t held in 2020 after the tennis calendar was dismantled by the coronavirus pandemic.
Three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal had gone into the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019 too as a favourite but went down to the eventual and surprise winner, Fabio Fognini, in the semifinal round.
Fognini then crushed Dusan Lajovic in straight sets to lift the title, his first ever Masters win. Lajovic had defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the other semifinal to make it to the title-decider.
Top seeded Djokovic went out of the competition in the quarterfinal stage, losing to Medvedev, in a hard-fought match, Lajovic defeated Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego, Fognini ground out a win against Borna Coric and Nadal brushed Guido Pella aside in the other last-eight matches.
None of the other seeded players from third to eighth made it past the third round, which included third round defeats for Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In the 2018 Monte Carlo Masters, Rafael Nadal didn’t have to break into much of a sweat in order to overcome Kei Nishikori in the final of the last year’s Monte-Carlo Masters, dropping just five games in the final.
In fact, Nadal was what Nadal is. After a first round bye, he defeated Aljaz Bedene in the second round and dropped four games, overcame Karen Khachanov in the third round (five games), crushed Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals (two games) and then steamrolled Grigor Dimitrov (five games) in the semi-finals to set up the title-decider against Nishikori.
Nishikori had had fitness issues coming into the previous season and as a result was unseeded in the tournament but that did not stop him from running through a plethora of top players in the tournament. He overcame a first set defeat to win against Tomas Berdych, then won against Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, needed another three-setter against Andreas Seppi before being shocking the second seeded Marin Cilic and third seeded Alexander Zverev in his next two matches.
Third seeded Novak Djokovic went down in the third round to Thiem, depriving fans of a potentially mouth-watering clash between the Serb and Nadal in the last-eight stage.
