Jannik Sinner v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head

While these two have never played each other at the highest level, they faced off in the Canberra Challenger of 2020. Ruusuvuori won that encounter in straight sets to make it to the third round.

Sinner Breaks into Top 30

While Sinner might have been sent packing in the opening rounds at both, the Australian Open and Montpellier Open, he has done enough since including at this competition to break into the top 30 of the ATP Rankings.

According to the live ATP rankings, Sinner is currently 28th in the world and if he can maintain that sort of a ranking he could avoid the repeat of what happened at the Australian Open earlier this year. As an unseeded player, Sinner was drawn to play Denis Shapovalov in the first round and while he put up a brave fight, he fell in five sets.

Speaking of his performances at the Miami Masters, Sinner did not break into much of a sweat in his second round match against Hugo Gaston following a first round bye but all eyes were on him for his third round match when he took on Karen Khachanov.

Khachanov was a 4/6 favourite going into that encounter and duly won the opening set after pair exchanged five breaks of serves. Sinner’s fightback began in the second set where he was a lot more cautious with his serving, and while he did face a break-point at 5-5, he did well to take the set into a tie-breaker where he cruised to a 7-2 win.

The third set also looked like it was headed to a tie-breaker but it was Sinner who got a crucial break in the ninth game, before serving it out to clinch the encounter.

Ruusuvuori Breaks into the Top 75

For someone who has never been in the top 80 of the ATP rankings before this, Ruusuvuori has already done a lot to prove he belongs to this level. And by making it to the round four with wins over Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and now in his latest encounter against Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, Ruusuvuori has also broken into the top 75.

Interestingly enough, all the matches in this tournament have gone to three sets, including the last two in which he had to come back from being a set down to run past his opponents.

Against Ymer, it could have gone either way too. After the Ruusuvuori made a comeback by winning the second set, he then broke Ymer early in the third to take the advantage. Three games later, he looked to have sealed the match by breaking the Swede once again and taking a 5-2 lead only to squander the two breaks of serves.

Another break of serve followed soon after and while Ruusuvuori then needed to save three break-points while serving for the match, he completed the victory 7-5 in the third.

Sinner will be a more difficult proposition though.

Sinner v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

Ruusuvuori has shown fighting capabilities and a touch of class but against a player who has himself been in form and tipped to do big things we have to go with Sinner for this. A straight-set victory for the Italian.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
