Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Damir Dzumhur Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Cologne Open last season when Fokina crushed Dzumhur in straight sets in the opening round of that competition.

Fokina Consistent But Searching for Breakthrough Show in 2021

It’s not been a year where Fokina has looked to be in a lot of trouble and yet, the only time he has managed to win back to back matches came in Montpellier. Other than that, Fokina, who had had to miss the Australian Open, has failed to make it past the second round at the next three ATP tournaments he has been a part of.

Fokina will take heart from the fact he had made a slow start to the 2020 season as well, only for the pandemic-related break to further make life difficult for him and the other players.

He came through well in the end though. A fourth round appearance at the US Open, a semifinal and a quarterfinal respectively at the two events in Cologne and a third round appearance at the Paris Masters tournament to round off the season helped him climb up a few ranks.

More recently, his performances on clay have improved too, with a maiden Challenger victory on this surface underlining that. Can he now kick-start his clay court swing with a win and go deeper than he has in the last three tournaments?

Dzumhur Finally Wins One in Miami

When Dzumhur won his opening round match at the Miami Masters earlier this year against South African Kevin Anderson, it was like a huge weight off his shoulders. Because the last time Dzumhur had made it past the opening hurdle in an ATP tournament was way back in September 2019 when he reached the quarterfinal of the Zhuhai Open.

Since then, Dzumhur’s struggles have been well-chronicled and he has fallen from 85th in the world to his current 126th rank on the ATP charts.

Interestingly, even in Miami, he had crashed out in the qualifiers but made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser before catching Anderson on the wrong foot.

Dzumhur then moved to the clay courts of Marbella for the Challenger tournament which was held last week here, winning his opener before going down to Mario Vilella Martinez in the second.

He now faces a big challenge here, and it would be interesting to see if he can put up bit of a fight on a surface he does reasonably well on.

Fokina v Dzumhur Prediction and Tip

Fokina is 3/10 to win this, and 8/11 to do that in straight sets, and we believe that while Dzumhur will put up a solid fight, the Spaniard should come away a winner in straight sets.

Tip: Fokina to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
