Zarazua Will Look to Start Well
Mexico’s Renata Zarazua heads to Charleston after reaching the second round of the Miami Open on her WTA 1000 debut.
The 23-year-old right-hander, who has won two ITF titles in her career, qualified for the main draw of the Miami Open by beating Australia’s Astra Sharma and Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova. She then edged out Japan’s Nao Hibino in a three-set thriller to record her first WTA 1000 victory. The Mexican’s run was halted in the Round of 64 after she was double bageled by former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber.
Having failed to qualify for the Australian Open earlier this year, Zarazua played in a couple of ITF events in the U.S., losing in the first round in one and reaching the semifinal in the other.
She then featured in a couple of WTA 250 events at home, and started off well by beating Poland’s Katrzyna Kawa 7-6, 6-0 in the first round in Guadalajara. She, however, went down fighting to Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in a three-set Round of 16 contest.
At the Monterrey Open, Slovania’s Tamara Zidansek defeated Zarazua in the first round in straight sets.
Zarazua, who has 15 doubles titles at the ITF level, reached the second round of the French Open on her Grand Slam debut last year. She defeated France’s Elsa Jacquemot in the first round and then pulled out a stunning performance in the next round, bageling Elina Svitolina in the second set before going down in three.

Early Days for Navarro
On Tuesday, Zarazua will face America’s Emma Navarro, who will be playing her first tournament in 2021.
Ranked 481st in the world, the 19-year-old was the French Open girl’s singles finalist in 2019, losing to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. She won the doubles title though with fellow American Chloe Bech. The pair was also the runner-up at the Australian Open girl’s event the same year.
Navarro, who received a wildcard for the Charleston event, had also received a wildcard for the same tournament in 2019, when she lost to Germany’s Laura Siegmund 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.
The right-handed Navarro has one doubles title at the ITF level. She was 1-7 from all events in 2020, which included a hard-fought first-round defeat to Sloane Stephens in Monterrey.
Renata Zarazua v Emma Navarro Prediction and Tip
Given Zarazua’s experience at this level, she will be the favourite to win the contest and advance for a second round meeting with Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova who ousted America’s Desirae Krawczyk in the first round on Monday.
Tip: Games Handicap Navarro +6.5: 4/6 (bet365)
