Fabio Fognini v Jaume Munar Head to Head
There have been two previous matches between these players before this and both of them came in 2019. In the first, on the hard courts of the Australian Open, Fognini defeated Munar in straight sets before the Spanish player had his revenge on the clay of Buenos Aires, winning in three gruelling sets in the first round.

One of the more solid clay court players around, Fognini had a woeful last season overall but he would have been more concerned about the manner in which he went about his business on this surface.
For a player ranked in the top 20 and having won a Masters title on clay, Fognini was shockingly underwhelming as he lost four of his five matches on the surface including at the first round of the French Open. He had ended the season on a 5-10 win-loss record.
This season he has begun with a notedly better showing by having reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and winning two of the four singles matches he played at the ATP Cup.
More recently the Italian player fell in the second round of the Acapulco Open and then lost his opener in Miami but a change to the clay courts of Andalucia Open should help Fognini’s cause.

In-Form Munar Could Prove Litmus Test
Fognini would have hoped for an easier opening test than Jaume Munar who comes into this tournament on the back of some excellent results on clay. The Spaniard has played all his matches on clay this year, including three Challenger competitions and of those he has made it to the final thrice.
While Munar has one Challenger title under his belt this season, he also entered this tournament on the back of a final appearance at the Marbella Challenger which was played in the lead-up to this competition.
And all this form showed in his opening round win over Henri Laaksonen, whom he routed 6-4, 6-1 to set up a meeting with Fognini.
In what turned out to be a clinical performance from Munar, he faced just one break-point in the entire match and saved it easily, while at the same time broke his opponent three times to register a win in an hour and 21 minutes.
