Tsitsipas Opens His Clay Campaign

The world number five has played all his matches on hard court surfaces this season, winning 17 of his 22 but Tsitsipas is yet to win a title in 2021. Clay hasn’t been a forte, as can be seen from his only clay court title coming in Estoril in 2019.

That said, Tsitsipas has reached in three other finals on clay, at the Barcelona Open, Madrid Masters and the German Open, the last of which came in the second half of 2020.

This season, Tsitsipas has done well at the Australian Open, making it to the semifinal where he went down to Daniil Medvedev and then made it to the final of the Acapulco Open, falling to Alexander Zverev there.

Tsitsipas now takes on a player who has surprised a few with his play this year, but a lot of those results have come on hard court surfaces.

Karatsev Hoping to Continue from Musetti Win

Karatsev was ranked 293rd in the world at the start of the previous season. He kick-started this year ranked 114th.

Today he has reached 29th – with a career-best of 27th – thanks to his performances at the Australian Open and the ATP Dubai. At the former, as a qualifier, Karatsev went on to make it to the semifinal where he fell to Novak Djokovic and in Dubai, he went on to defeat Lorenzo Sonego, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev before crushing Lloyd Harris in the final to lift the title.

What was always going to be interesting to watch was the transformation into clay and Karatsev has begun well.

Taking on Lorenzo Musetti, Karatsev needed an hour and 27 minutes to make it through to the second round. He broke Musetti in the first game of the opening set, and then again in the ninth game to wrap up the set.

In the second set, the Russian saved three break-points in the fourth game and then broke Musetti as he served to stay in the match.

Can he dish something like this out to Tsitsipas as well?

Tsitsipas v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas is 4/9 to win this and while this would be his first match on clay, we will look to back him on this one against the inexperienced Karatsev.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win: 4/9 (bet365)
