Andrey Rublev v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

The only previous encounter between these two players came last year at the US Open with Rublev winning the tie in three sets including two bagels. The change in surface could change things around.

Rublev No Mug on Clay

While on the one hand Daniil Medvedev has openly said he struggles on clay, Rublev’s performance on this surface isn’t one to write off in a hurry. Especially if one has to look at his showing last year on dirt.

Having featured in a couple of exhibition tournaments on clay during the pandemic break last year, Rublev then took part at the Rome Masters, Hamburg Open and the French Open. With each showing, his performances kept improving till he reached the quarterfinal at Roland-Garros, his joint-best performance at a Grand Slam competition.

This year, Rublev has begun where he left off in 2020.

While he is yet to play on clay, the Russian is on a 20-4 win-loss record, having won two titles already – a singles title at the Rotterdam Open and a team victory at the ATP Cup where he won all his singles matches.

Rublev will now want to build on his solid overall form and a distinguished clay court season last year.

Caruso Limps Past 388th-Ranked Wild-Card

Lucas Catrina’s career-best ranking is 341st and he had entered this tournament on the back of having played just Futures and a couple of Challenger competitions this year. Caruso, a world number 89, would have been expected to get past Catrina rather easily in their opening round tie.

That’s not how the match panned out.

Caruso had to expend three hours and seven minutes worth of energy to get past his wild-card opponent, needing three sets and two-breakers to edge him out.

He was broken thrice in the match, which was a saving grace given Caruso fell a set and a break down, but he broke back to push the second set into a tie-breaker following which he won that and the third 6-3 to complete the victory.

The Italian had earlier overcome Martin Klizan and Bernard Tomic to make it to the main draw but had exited the first rounds of two other clay court competitions before this. Rublev will be a bridge too far.

Rublev v Caruso Prediction and Tip

Not surprisingly, Rublev is a heavy favourite with the only thing going in favour of Caruso being his lack of rustiness. Expecting Rublev to win in straight sets.

Tip: Rublev to win AND Over 18.5 games: 21/20 (bet365)
