Ekaterina Alexandrova v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

There has been only one previous meeting between these two players at this level with Muchova winning that match in the quarterfinals of the WTA Moscow in 2019. They had also played on the ITF circuit in 2015 and 2016 and Alexandrova was a 2-0 at that time.

Since making it to the semifinal of the Gippsland Trophy, which was a tune-up tournament for the Australian Open, Alexandrova’s lost five of the nine matches she’s played.

This includes first round defeats at the hands of Clara Tauson and Cori Gauff, but more stunningly a loss to Margarita Gasparyan in the second round in the St. Petersburg Open.

Clay isn’t quite a surface the Russian enjoys either. She did make it as far as the third round at last year’s French Open but again, her overall win-loss record on that surface in 2020 was 4-5. In 2019, it was even worse despite ending the clay swing with a third round in Roland-Garros.

She had earlier begun the 2019 season with a five-match losing streak on dirt, underlining how much more difficult things have been for her on this surface. And given that she faces a top opponent like Muchova first up, it’s not going to get any easier.

Muchova Hasn’t Played Since Australian Open

The Czech Muchova was one of the surprise packages of the Australian Open this year, shocking Ash Barty in the quarterfinal before falling to Jennifer Brady in the last four. Unfortunately she hasn’t been able to play any tennis after that and it makes it difficult to understand what sort of form would she be in coming into this clay swing opener.

Still, a 9-1 win-loss record for the world number 22 this season indicates she would be a difficult player to surmount, despite her middling record on this surface.

In 2020 her only match on this surface came in the first round of the French Open where she fell to Christina McHale, but one of her top tournament performances occurred in 2019 when she reached the final of the Prague Open.

The advantage that Muchova does seem to have is her opponent’s form has been anything but extraordinary and if she can shrug off her rustiness, things could turn in her favour quickly.

Alexandrova v Muchova Prediction and Tip

A 4/7 favourite, Muchova will be our pick to win this one too given her own record and her opponent’s struggles. Had it not been for her rustiness she would have been a very obvious pick too.

Tip: Muchova to win: 4/7 (bet365)
