Elina Svitolina v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

There is a long history between Svitolina and Kerber, one that has seen them face off 13 times and Svitolina leads 8-5. Interestingly they have played just once on clay, a match that came in Rome in 2018 and Svitolina had won that in straight sets.

Svitolina Makes First Move on Clay

Svitolina will kick-start her clay swing with a second round match here in Stuttgart as she looks to build towards her attempt to win her first ever Grand Slam. The Ukrainian player could feel slightly rusty given it’s been a while since she played on clay.

However, five of Svitolina’s 15 WTA titles have come on clay including her last one in Strasbourg, so it should be a matter of time before she gets back used to playing on this surface.

The world number five will be coming into this tournament on the back of a semifinal appearance at the Miami Open late last month, having earlier been stopped in her tracks in the fourth round at the Australian Open.

While her opponent is one of the top players to have ever graced the sport, Svitolina wouldn’t mind playing her given her own record against Kerber and the latter’s poor form in recent times.

Kerber Starts off Well v Gorgodze

It was an easy initiation to clay for the season for Germany’s Kerber, who delivered a straight-set rout of Ekaterina Gorgodze. Kerber was on court for an hour and 13 minutes as she carved out a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the world number 215 and march into second round with a good workout.

Kerber was in red-hot form to begin with as she ran to a 5-0 lead over her opponent, before getting broken as she prepared to serve for the bagel.

In the second, Kerber broke early again and while she was broken in the second game, it didn’t turn out to be much of a problem as she responded with two more breaks of serves to complete the victory.

Before this, however, Kerber had come into this encounter with a 4-5 win-loss record on hard court surfaces this year and this underwhelming form could be a cause for concern for the former world number one.

Svitolina v Kerber Prediction and Tip

It looks to be a straightforward win in the offing for Svitolina but the one factor going against her is the lack of matches on clay this season. Can she make that switch from hard court surfaces to clay quickly enough?

Tip: Svitolina to win AND Over 20.5 games in the match: 15/8 (bet365)
