Top-ranked women’s player Simona Halep has announced she has suffered a disk hernia in her back after an MRI scan was conducted at the conclusion of her campaign at the 2018 China Open. More details on her absence span are awaited for now.

Halep did not have a great time on court in her first round match, losing her first set to Ons Jabeur 6-1 in Beijing. At the end of the set, she retired from her match because of a back injury which has now revealed to be something slightly more serious.

In a tweet, Halep informed of her disk hernia issue:

“Hi everyone, wanted to give you a quick update. I had an MRI on my back and found out I have a disk hernia,”

“I will discuss with doctors in the next few days but hope to be back soon and will keep you updated. Thanks for all your support.”

What this injury means is that Halep’s near-term tennis future seems to be in doubt, and that includes her participation in the year-end WTA tournament WTA Finals. This tournament will be played between October 21 and 28 this year, and Halep is one of three players who has already qualified for the competition, along with Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka.

Meanwhile, at the China Open, Daria Kasaktina followed Halep out of the competition with an injury, bowing out to Laura Siegemund after losing the first set. And in a surprise former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko was dumped out of the China Open 6-0, 6-0 by wild-card entrant and China’s Wang Qiang in her second round match.

Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina are among the other seeded players who have bitten the dust so far.
