Svetlana Kuznetsova v Jelena Ostapenko
The pair have met once before in the second round at Doha in 2016, Ostapenko winning in straight sets.
Kuznetsova Now At Veteran Stage of Glittering Career
Now 35, Kuznetsova is approaching the veteran stage of a career, that has brought her 18 WTA titles, including Grand Slam success in New York in 2004, and in Paris, five years later.
She has won two other clay court titles as well, and was a beaten finalist in Madrid in 2015, losing to Petra Kvitova on that occasion.
However, her last final came nearly two years ago, and, although she still lays regularly on tour, she is not the player that she was in her pomp.
This year, having reached the second round in Melbourne, she then reached the third round in both Dubai and St. Petersburg, but then struggled in Miami, and went down to a first round defeat in three sets to Alize Cornet of France.
She has not played for over a month since, and this will be her first clay court match of 2021.

Can Ostapenko Rediscover her 2017 Form Again?
Like Kuznetsova, Ostapenko is a previous winner of the French Open. The Latvian won it as a teenager in 2017, but, unlike Kuznetsova, there have not been multiple titles since, with just the Korean Open in 2017 and the Luxembourg Open in 2019 sharing space with the French crown in her trophy cabinet.
She has been on a long search for the sort of form that made her a Grand Slam winner, and after reaching the third round of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne, she failed to get beyond the third round of her next three events.
The Latvian improved slightly in Miami, reaching the third round before losing to Ashleigh Barty, and them, turning her attention to clay, won her first match in Stuttgart last week, beating the Swiss Player Stefanie Voegele. However, she then went down to Karolina Pliskova, the world number 9, in three sets.
Kuznetsova v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip
Ostapenko, although the lower ranked of the pair, will start the favourite to win against the Russian veteran.
The Latvian has 12 years on the Russian and Kuznetsova may start to suffer if the match goes to three sets.
Tip: Ostapenko to win: 8/15 (bet365)
