Andrey Rublev v Tommy Paul Head to Head

They have had two previous meetings with Rublev having won both. The first came in the second round of the 2018 Washington Open which Rublev clinched in straight sets before Paul managed to take a set off Rublev on the clays of the Hamburg Open of 2020.

Clay is the Real Deal for Rublev

For a player who has already pocketed a plethora of titles on hard court surfaces, Rublev had something interesting to say about clay. In an interview with TennisTV.com, Rublev said he believed clay is the real place to play tennis, thanks to the requirements off players.

Rublev cited physical fitness, temperament and smartness to be the dire need from players looking to win consistently on red dirt, noting:

“On clay, you have to be really fit to play each point, to play right directions, and you need to go and really beat the guys.”

And that’s what Rublev has been doing all this while too.

After winning a title in Rotterdam indoors on hard court, he managed to reach the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters – his first ever final in a Masters tournament had come on clay. And while he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in that final, it was a pointer towards how brilliantly his game had improved to cater to the needs of clay.

He begins his first ever campaign in Madrid on Tuesday.

Paul Goes Past Pedro

Tommy Paul had only recently gotten past Pedro Martinez, winning in Cagliari, but that had been down to his opponent’s injury and subsequent retirement. This time around, however, the American got a full go against the same opponent and won in straight sets.

Needing an hour and 35 minutes, Paul defeated Martinez 6-4, 7-5 to march into the second round and set up this meeting with Rublev.

And what was rather impressive from the 23-year-old Paul was he faced a mere solitary break-point in the entire match and saved it. In turn he broke his opponent twice, once in each set to win their cagey battle.

And while Paul’s recent form on clay reeks of struggles, he will be happy to have come into a match against Rublev with some sort of confidence under his belt. Will he, however, have the technical prowess to beat the Russian?

Rublev v Paul Prediction and Tip

Bookmakers are offering 5/1 for a Paul win while Rublev is 4/11 to win in straight sets. Seems to be a straightforward enough victory in the offing for the Russian.
