Andrey Rublev v John Isner Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came around six years ago in Miami where Isner won a second round match in straight sets.

Rublev Escapes Early Exit
Rublev had spoken of winning on clay being the real deal and having reached the final of Barcelona Open earlier this season, the Russian probably knew what he was talking. Except he almost fell at the very first hurdle in Madrid, winning in three sets and needing two hours and 21 minutes to get past Tommy Paul.
After a first round bye, Rublev looked to be headed towards what looked like a routine win for a man in the kind of form he is in when he broke Paul in the fifth game and led 4-2 in the opening set.
A lost serve in the eighth game didn’t seem like much of a bother for Russian who broke right back but failed to serve for the set twice – once at 5-4 and then at 6-5 – as he lost his serve both times.
The shock continued into the tie-breaker too when Rublev up a 4-0 and 5-1 lead to lose six points in a row and the set.
A late break in the second set helped him level things out though and then after saving three break-points in the third set, he broke Paul in the ninth game before serving out the match.
Rublev will hope for a better showing in the third round.

Isner Survives a Three-Set Thriller
In a match lasting two hours and 25 minutes, Isner survived a match-point before coming through in three sets and two tie-breakers to set up this meeting with Rublev. And in getting to the third round, Isner has now managed to get this far for the fifth time in his career in Madrid and fourth in a row.
It was a battle of excellent serving as neither player got too many chances to get past Roberto Bautista-Agut’s serves. In fact, Isner took it it a wholly different level, facing not a single break-point all match, as compared to the 10 his opponent endured. Bautista Agut managed to save nine of them, but the one he did not, came while serving at 4-5 in the first set for the Spaniard.
Bautista-Agut came back in the second set tie-breaker, clinching a mini-break of serve at 4-4 and from there on got both his serves right to level the match.
In the third, neither player found success breaking the other’s serve again, with things becoming even more difficult in the tie-breaker. Isner conceded an early mini-break only to break his opponent twice in a row.
The Spaniard did the same at 4-5 to help himself to a match-point but failed to hold serve. When Isner got the same chance, however, he managed to convert it and make it to the next round.
Rublev v Isner Prediction and Tip
Rublev is a favourite here but given it’s clay and given how Isner played last round, it could get interesting and we could see a three-setter again..
