Matteo Berrettini v Cristain Garin Head to Head
This is the third meeting between both players with the head-to-head tied at 1-1. While Garin won on the Munich clay in 2019, the Italian prevailed the same year on the Shanghai hard courts.

Matteo Berrettini had a strong 2019 but had an injury plagued pandemic year 2020, which saw tournament withdrawals and disappointing losses.
2021 started well for him Down Under, leading Italy to the ATP Cup finals winning three matches in a row and then a good Aussie Open run until he unfortunately had to pull out of his fourth round against Stefanos Tsitsipas with an injury.
Skipping through the season in February and March, Berrettini returned at the start of the clay season with an early loss at Monte Carlo to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He followed it with a good run at the Serbian Open in Belgrade to prevail a winner in the title round against the find of the season, Russia’s Aslan Karatsev.
Coming into Madrid with confidence at the back of the success in Serbia, the Italian has looked good this week comfortably dispatching compatriot Fabio Fognini and Argentine Federico Delbonis. Being in a section of the draw where the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are now eliminated, the Italian will fancy his chances for a deep run this weekend.

Garin Confident After Medvedev Win
Cristain Garin from Chile grew up on clay and has won all his five ATP titles on the surface, but come Masters 1000s on clay and the French Open, his record leaves a lot to be desired. He has never been past the third round at the Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome or the French Open and has now made his first ever final eight appearance at a Masters 1000 on the surface.
2021 did not start too well for the Chilean with opening round losses at Delray Beach and in Argentina. An impressive showing on the clay at his home tournament, the Chilean Open resulted in another title in the bag and would have hopefully set him up well for the season to follow.
However, he was not able to gain momentum in any of Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona or Estoril in particular losing his first match in three of the four venues and making the round of 16 at Monte Carlo only.
The Chilean started this week well with convincing wins against Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco and German Dominik Koepfer. Up against Daniil Medvedev who remains reluctant on clay, Garin pulled off a confidence boosting win, 6-1 in the decider and will now fancy his chances for a good run for the first time at a Masters 1000 on the surface.
Berrettiini v Garin Prediction and Tip
Both players have been in good touch in recent weeks. With the Belgrade title for Berrettini and the continued good form this week, he will be confident, but so will Garin after a win against the likes of Medvedev.
Expect a good contest with the Chilean scraping through in a decider.
