Ash Barty v Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka had posted her own photo from the Stuttgart Open final on Instagram with a caption, “When you see Ash Barty driving away with your Porsche”.
This was Sabalenka seeing the funny side of things after falling to the world number one Barty in the final of that competition but on court, the in-form Belarusian would be very determined that doesn’t repeat.
And that can be seen from the manner in which Sabalenka has got all the way to the final. Over the five matches she has played in Madrid, Sabalenka has lost just 18 games with a match total of five games in the semifinal against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova being her most.
Barty is not a world number one for no reason and given she has now won 18 of her last 19 matches on clay including that final against Sabalenka, she would be doubly determined to let go of another chance to add a WTA title to her kitty.
The Aussie has been pushed at times but she did have a tougher draw too – having already beaten Petra Kvitova and Iga Swiatek, not to mention Paula Badosa, an upcoming star who is the only player to have defeated her in the last 19 clay-court matches.
All in all, this one might be tough to call for a winner but we believe there’s every chance of it going into a third set.

Dominic Thiem v John Isner
This is an interesting one in many ways. Most importantly, because the two players facing off, are both coming off some indifferent times.
Thiem, since winning the US Open last year, has seen his stocks fall a little. Sure, there was a final appearance at the ATP Finals, but a fourth loss at the Australian Open, and two losses from three matches in Dubai and Doha signalled something had gone wrong.
That he waited for this long to play his first match on clay this season in this competition was surprising too but he has now won both his opening matches. And while Alex De Minaur did test him a little, Thiem would be happy to have reached here in straight sets.
Isner, on the other hand, has gone back to relying on his serve to carve out the results. And those have been solid results too, with wins over Roberto Bautista-Agut and Andrey Rublev in his recent two matches.
When his serve starts to help, Isner becomes a potent force and that can be seen from the fact he has won four of the five tie-breakers over the three matches he has played in Madrid. Expecting him to take this into another tie-breaker or three wouldn’t be a surprise result, which is why we could see a few games played in this one.

Casper Ruud v Alexander Bublik
On paper this looks to be a one-sided contest what with Ruud starting out a 3/10 favourite while Bublik being 5/2 to win this.
There is merit to that argument too, given Ruud is a clay court specialist and is now gunning for his second successive clay court Masters 1000 semifinal while Bublik has only just come into his own on clay.
Odds of 5/2 look quite tempting though, which also allow us to look at the Games Handicap market. Bublik at +4.5 is 8/11 with bet365 while at +3.5 it’s 9/10 with Unibet. Depending on your risk appetite could go with either.
