Belinda Bencic v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head

It’s 3-2 in favour of Bencic on the WTA tour, with both having won once apiece on clay. Their most recent meeting came as recently as the Madrid Open last week where Bencic managed to carve out a straight-set win in round one.

Improving Bencic Hoping for Consistency

Since making it to the final at the Adelaide International earlier this season, Bencic’s form looked to have gone for a toss. A defeat to Iga Swiatek in that title-decider was followed by four losses from her next six matches, raising questions over her preparedness for the season.

That also included an opening defeat in Charleston and Bencic followed that up with a win in the first round at Stuttgart but another defeat soon after.

Which is why when she came into the Madrid Open, not too many gave her much of a chance to go deep into the competition. Wins over Kristina Mladenovic, Bernarda Pera and even one of the in-form players, Ons Jabeur in the first three rounds of that tournament would have given her some confidence.

And while she fell to Paula Badosa in the quarterfinal – the second time she had lost to her this year – Bencic’s results in Madrid could act as a strong springboard to launch another set of positive results. Or so she would hope anyway.

Mladenovic Struggling in Recent Times

Since making it to the quarterfinals at the Lyon Open in the first week of March, Mladenovic has struggled to get going. Her best result was a second round appearance at the Istanbul Open and other than that she has won just one match in Dubai.

Last week, Mladenovic made it through the qualifiers to enter the Madrid Open main draw before losing to Bencic in straight sets. And this week, in the lead-up to the Italian Open, the Frenchwoman was sent packing in the qualifiers by Vera Zvonareva but managed to qualify as a lucky loser.

As luck would have it for the lucky loser, she faces Bencic yet again and while she did not have the best time against the Swiss player last week, she has won a handful of matches against her in the past.

Can Mladenovic overturn the previous result and put up a better performance this time around given she has beaten Bencic on clay before, and in Rome?

Bencic v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip

Bencic is 4/9 to win this but we believe it might not be as straightforward as their previous meeting where the Swiss player had dropped six games. Could see a better fight and a longer encounter.
