Carreno Busta Resumes After Madrid Shocker

Pablo Carreno Busta’s renaissance has been one of the least mentioned stories in tennis in 2021. After a difficult 2019, the Spaniard appeared destined to fall from grace until he managed to stabilize in a transition year in 2020.

Now, having hauled himself to inside the top 20 he is on the cusp of breaking the top 10 for the second time in his career. Carreno Busta’s culmination of this terrific form was rewarded with a fifth career title on home soil in Marbella.

That win gave him immense impetus and momentum that he carried in the major events such as Monte Carlo and Barcelona, where he performed decently.

However, at the Madrid Masters last week, the hard-grafting 29-year-old suffered a catastrophic first-round loss to World No. 77 Federico Delbonis. He led 6-3 4-0 before the Argentine came storming back to turn the match on its head. It will be fascinating to see how the Spaniard picks himself up and rebounds from such a calamitous defeat.

Djere Winless in Four

Since his title defense at the Sardinia Open came to juddering halt, Laslo Djere has found wins hard to come by. In fact his semifinal thumping of Nikoloz Basilashvili on 10th April at that event was his last match win at tour level.

Defeat to Karen Khachanov in Monte Carlo was expected, but falling to Gianluca Mager in Belgrade was quite a shock. Granted the Italian is an accomplished campaigner, but at 13/5, and given his struggles in qualifying, Djere could not lay a punch.

Djere’s low ranking meant that he did not meet the cut off list in Madrid, and despite being the top seed in qualifying, he was bundled out by Juan Ignacio Londero to extend his barren spell to four matches.

Djere’s record in Rome is 1-1, with his first and thus far only particpiation at the Eternal city coming in 2019.

Carreno Busta v Djere Prediction and Tip

A few weeks ago, this would have been an even matchup. But given Djere’s struggles lately, the Spaniard should hold his inch and progress.
