Amanda Anisimova v Wang Qiang Head to Head

There have been two previous outings between the two and both times it was Anisimova who came through to win them. Both matches came in 2018 and in first rounds of Miami Open and San Jose Open at that.

Anisimova Struggles Continue

Following top performances from Anisimova in 2018 and 2019, talks of a super American talent looking to break into the top echelons of tennis had gained momentum.

And why not, given Anisimova had won surprised a few to make the fourth round in Indian Wells, and was then a finalist at the Hiroshima Open in 2018. She then won her maiden WTA title on the clay courts of Bogota and carried that form into French Open that year to reach the semifinal.

In all this, she kept taking down some of the stalwarts of the game, which included the likes of Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova.

Unfortunately for her, a host of personal issues and injury problems look to have made it doubly difficult to recapture the same form. In fact, she has almost fallen away and had it not been for the tweaked WTA ranking system, she would have been facing a rank of worse than her current 38th in the world.

Anisimova comes into this tournament with a 3-4 win-loss record this season that includes 1-2 on clay. Can she win one here to emulate her best showing in Rome?

Qiang in No Form Either

Qiang would love to make up for lost time, having missed the entire post-pandemic tennis season in 2020 but her results have just not been supportive.

She has featured in 10 tournaments this season and the former world number 12 has won a mere four matches. The Chinese player began the season with three defeats in a row, won a match at the Phillip Island Trophy against Maddison Inglis who was 2/1 odds to win that one, and then lost in the second round.

Another win against another player with long odds followed before Qiang lost the second round at Adelaide too following which another couple of losses followed. There have been opening round victories in Miami and Istanbul but none of them much to write home about.

And she now enters this competition with defeats to Ana Konjuh (Istanbul) and Karolina Muchova (Madrid) in succession under her belt. While she is playing someone who herself has had recent troubles, Qiang’s form doesn’t fill anyone with a lot of confidence.

Anisimova v Qiang Prediction and Tip

Anisimova is an overwhelming favourite here at 1/4 and the reason is even in her losses she has performed well – plus those defeats have come to stronger opponents on the rankings. We think this could go into a third set though.

Tip: Anisimova to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 11/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
