Alexander Zverev v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the players. All their prior meetings have been at Masters 1000 tournaments. Zverev leads the head-to-head 2-1. While they split winnings at the Rome Masters, Zverev prevailed in Shanghai on the faster hard courts.

Zverev Seeks Second Madrid Title After Strong Week
It has been an up and down last few months for Alexander Zverev with a mix of on and off court issues leading into the 2021 season.
Zverev looked in good touch Down Under leading Germany to the ATP Cup semis and falling short in the Aussie Open quarters against eventual winner Novak Djokovic. A title win at the Acapulco 500 set him up with momentum for the season, but then he hit a lean patch thereafter with unimpressive early losses at Miami, Monte Carlo and at home in Munich.
Coming to Madrid where he was the winner in 2018, Zverev was aware how crucial it was to hit good form here as he would need momentum heading into the French Open at the end of the month.
The German has drawn challenging opponents here this week, beginning with the likes of Kei Nishikori and Dan Evans, with straight set wins against both. Zverev pulled off one of the biggest achievements of his career in the quarter-finals defeating the King of Clay Rafael Nadal in straight sets and setting up a semi-final against friend and rival Dominic Thiem.
Despite a 2-8 head-to-head against Thiem, Zverev came in as a slight favorite given his prior success here, the win against Nadal and the fact that the Austrian is returning to the tour after a short hiatus.
The German was in control of the match from the very beginning, breaking the Austrian early in both sets and wrapping up a 6-3, 6-4 win and into a second Madrid 1000 final eyeing a fourth Masters title.

Berrettini With Momentum On Clay
Italian Matteo Berrettini broke onto the scene in 2019 being the holder of three ATP titles, making the US Open semis and qualifying for the year end ATP Tour Finals in London. A weaker 2020 followed with his return to the tour after the pandemic hiatus seeing early losses and injury breaks.
The Italian started 2021 on the right note leading Italy to the finals of the ATP Cup and looking good at the Aussie Open before a round of 16 withdrawal against Stefanos Tsitsipas with an injury.
Berrettini missed some of the tournaments after the Aussie Open and made his return on the clay. He has been in good touch winning the ATP 250 in Belgrade, his fourth career title and continuing his good form this week in Madrid.
Early wins against Fabio Fognini and Federico Delbonis were followed by a closely fought final eight match against Chilean Cristain Garin where he came back from behind to win and set up a semi-final against in-form Norwegian Casper Ruud.
Berrettini looked in sublime touch in the match against Ruud from the beginning, breaking at crucial junctures in both sets and pulling off a 6-4, 6-4 win and qualifying for his first ever Masters 1000 final.
Zverev v Berrettini Prediction and Tip
It is rare to see two big servers with powerful games in a final on the slower clay surface, but the Madrid altitude and faster clay courts may have something to do with it.
Both have been in great touch this week and pulled off impressive wins. Zverev may start as a slight favorite, but that is because he has more experience and three Masters 1000s under his belt, including a title here in Madrid.
The match will be decided by who is better on the big points on the day. Expect Berrettini to win his first Masters 1000 in a tight three-setter.
