Kei Nishikori v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Nishikori leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning their first match 10 years ago at the Australian Open, and on the clay of Madrid in 2016.

Fognini’s only win came on the hard courts of Miami, winning a quarterfinal encounter in 2017.

Nishikori Beaten By Zverev in Madrid

Despite succumbing to a straight-sets defeat to Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Madrid Masters, there is room for optimism for Kei Nishikori as he prepares for his ninth visit to the eternal city.

Nishikori’s lower-ranking (currently 43rd in the world) means that he is the beneficiary of some chastening draws in the early stages of tournaments. His last three defeats have all come against players entrenched inside the top 10: Tsitsipas in Miami, Nadal in Barcelona, and most recently Zverev in Madrid.

The Japanese No. 1 has a fine record in Rome down the years. He is a three-time quarterfinalist, and in 2016 he made the semifinal before losing to Djokovic.

Nishikori will need a major improvement in his second serve which averaged at around 38% in his most recent defeat, if he is to combat Fabio Fognini’s aggressive return approach in their first round match at Foro Italico.

Fognini Returns Home After Madrid Loss

Things have disintegrated rather quickly for Fabio Fognini as he gears to return to the Rome Masters. His title defense in Monte Carlo came to a crushing halt in the quarterfinal, losing to an inspired Casper Ruud. Then his adventure took a turn for the worse in Marbella.

Fognini was disqualified for directing abuse to a lines judge in a second-round match against Zapata Miralles. He has since appealed that decision and demands closure.

As headspace continues to dictate his matches, the unpredictable 33-year-old managed to sort his on-court character and bounced back with a three-set win over Carlo Taberener in Madrid. However, his journey was short-lived as he lost to countryman Matteo Berrettini.

With Rome opening turnstiles to spectators, the one-time quarterfinalist could do with a vociferous home support.

Nishikori v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Nishikori has fared better in recent weeks against accomplished claycourters. Taking the Japanese on moneyline as the more disciplined baseliner is a smart pick.
