Can Pella Improve his Rome Record?

Pella has a poor record in Rome, never having been beyond the first round here.

That is something of a surprise because, as a natural clay court player, conditions in the Italian capital should suit his game. All five of his finals have been on that surface, and his one senior ATP win, the Brazil Open title two years ago.

The Argentine looks to be a long way off that sort of form in 2021, though,

Having won just one match in a conventional manner all year, playing for Argentina in the ATP Cup against Japan.

A succession of first round defeats followed ,and, when he did reach the second round in Munich, it was because his opponent Egor Gerasimov of Belarus had to retire from their match with injury.

The boot was on the other foot last week in Spain – he was a set down and level in games with Jannik Simmer when it was his turn to pull out of the Madrid Open with injury.

Fucsovics, a Rotterdam Finalist

Fucsovics record in Rome is even worse = this is only the second time he has featured in the main draw here.

Better known as a hard court player, nevertheless he has enjoyed some success on clay, winning the Geneva Open in 2018.

His best run of the year so far came in a  three week spell beginning at the end of February.

There he came through qualifying in Rotterdam and battled his way to the final, losing eventually to Andrey Rublev. He followed that up by reaching the quarter-finals in Dubai, before his progress was halted by that man Rublev again.

Since then, he was beaten in the second round of Miami, and has lost his first two matches of the season on clay, losing in the first round of both Monte Carlo and Madrid, beaten by Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Bublik, respectively.

Pella v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Neither man has a good record in Rome, but Fucsovics has won their previous two meetings, both on clay, and will start the favourite to maintain his 100% record against the Argentine.
