Andrey Rublev v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

There have been two previous main draw matches played between these two players with both players having won one apiece. Rublev won more recently at the ATP Cup this year, clinching a stiff three-setter, after Struff had won their opener at the St. Petersburg Open in 2018.

Earlier, they had met at the 2016 French Open qualifiers and the 2017 Irving Challenger as well and tied 1-1.

In 2020, they featured in the Thiem’s Seven exhibition competition on clay which Rublev won 15-13 in the final set match tie-breaker.

Rublev Hoping to Put the Spain Trip Behind Him

It had been a brilliant start to the clay swing for Rublev as he stunned Rafael Nadal on his way to the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Wins over Casper Ruud and Roberto Bautista-Agut punctuated that showing as well.

However, his visit to Spain after that runnerup trophy in Monte-Carlo, didn’t prove to be as fruitful.

At Barcelona, Rublev fell in straight sets to the highly talented but relatively inexperienced Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals whereas his Madrid Masters campaign ended even sooner.

In the third round there, Rublev was dismantled in three sets by John Isner, with the American backing his high power game to out-serve his opponent and carve out a win over two tie-breakers.

Rublev will hope to bid his Spanish trip a goodbye with a solid start here after an opening round bye.

Struff Sends Bedene Packing

Interestingly, much like Rublev, Struff has also earned himself a berth in the final of a clay court tournament already this season. It came in Munich where Struff lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the end.

That performance was sandwiched by two opening round losses, losing to Grigor Dimitrov at Monte-Carlo and to Alexei Popyrin in Madrid.

Which is why, the 41st-ranked German would have been satisfied with the way he tamed lucky loser Aljaz Bedene in his opening round encounter. Struff won 6-3, 6-1 to set up this Rublev meeting in round two.

In a match lasting an hour and six minutes, Struff saved both of his two break-points while getting past his opponent’s serve on four separate occasions to ensure the victory.

Rublev v Struff Prediction and Tip

While Struff looked good in his opening win, Rublev is a different breed of tennis player and should have no worries in sealing his third round berth.
