Brady Eases Past Zhang
Brady’s best results might have come on hard court surfaces but the improvement has been there on clay too and that was on display in her first round demolition of Shuai Zhang in Rome.
The American came through in straight sets in a match lasting an hour and 17 minutes to seal her second round berth in a competition where she had never won a match. Brady won 6-1, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Alexandrova.
The first set did not see much of a fight from Brady’s Chinese opponent as she cruised through three breaks of serves and didn’t face a single break-point in return. Things did change a little in the second set with Zhang drawing first blood as she broke Brady in the third game but the American retaliated to level it off at 4-4.
And as Zhang served to stay in the match, Brady wasted three chances to clinch the match before converting the fourth to march into the second round.

Alexandrova Surprise for Kostyuk
Teenager Marta Kostyuk is a fast-improving player and had gone into this first round match as a favourite against Alexandrova. Which is why the 33rd-ranked Russian would be rather pleased with her straight-set drubbing of Kostyuk in her opening round competition.
Alexandrova, who had never won a match in Rome before this, came through 6-3, 6-1 against Kostyuk, needing only an hour and 16 to register the victory.
A break in the first and the ninth game of the opening set put Alexandrova in front in her opener, and she followed that up with back to back breaks to kick-start the second set and move 4-0 ahead.
While Kostyuk broke the Russian in the fifth game against the run of play, she completed an easy win with a third break of serve in the set and followed it up with an easy hold.
Alexandrova, who was earlier bundled out in the first round in Madrid, will hope to test out her American opponent.
Brady v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip
Brady is a favourite but only just, as Alexandrova’s 6/5 look quite tempting here. One way or the other we expect a fighting show that goes into a third set.
