Thiem Comes Back from the Brink

One expected a lot better from Thiem when he took to court for his second round match against Marton Fucsovics but in the end he managed to live to fight another day.

The world number four Thiem was broken three times in the first set and then fell 3-1 behind in the second before mounting a stunning comeback that saw him bagel his opponent in the third.

Having faced 11 break-points in the first one and a half sets, Thiem finally found his serving game and had to save just four more in the latter half of the encounter to register a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0 win over his Hungarian opponent.

Thiem had earlier made it to the semifinal in Madrid after having come back from his exhaustion issues. He had lost in straight sets against Alexander Zverev before admitting he was happy with his showing.

One can be sure he wouldn’t have been that happy with his opener here but come Thursday he will be aiming to put that behind him and win another match.

Sonego Enters Maiden Third Round in Rome

Having first played at his home tournament here in Rome in 2018, Sonego has never made it past the second round before this. Which is why he would be rather pleased to have clinched a round of 16 berth, having gotten the better of Gianluca Mager in his second round encounter on Wednesday.

Sonego, who had needed three sets to get past Gael Monfils in his opening round here, came through 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 28 minutes against Mager.

The first of those sets was closely fought with the players exchanging breaks of serve in games two and three to kick things off. Things then went on serve till 4-4 before Sonego managed to carve out a break-point that he converted before serving out the set.

In the second, neither player got a break-point till the seventh game when Sonego managed a couple of them and converted the first. Couple of easy service games from the Italian ensured there was no coming back into the contest for Mager.

Sonego now faces a really tough challenge but the Cagliari Open champion has his own confidence and the struggle of his opponent to go with for this one.

Thiem v Sonego Prediction and Tip
