Barty Races Past Shvedova

There wasn’t too much doubt about the favourites tag behind Barty starting out in her second round match against the comeback player Yaroslava Shvedova. And after a slow start for the Aussie, she came through in straight sets to advance to the third.

Barty, who had an opening round bye, was broken in the very first game of the opening set and for a while it looked like things were looking difficult for her as she found it tough to get that break back.

The world number one got her first breaking opportunity in the eighth game and she clinched it to level the match at 4-4. She then saved one more break-point before breaking her opponent to 15 to pocket the opening.

Shvedova’s confidence smashed, Barty raced to a 2-0 lead, and while she was broken right back, the Aussie rattled off back to back breaks before closing the match 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 19 minutes.

This was Barty’s 12th win on clay this season to her two losses.

Kudermetova Tames Garcia With Ease

After having stunned Elise Mertens in her opener, Kudermetova was a strong favourite to get past Caroline Garcia and she held her side of the bargain with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in their second round encounter.

Kudermetova needed an hour and 28 minutes and like Barty was also broken twice in the match but out-muscled her French opponent with four breaks of her own.

The Russian kick-started the first set with a break in the very game and while she dropped her serve in the second, it was followed by another break in the third game of the set. That was all she needed as Kudermetova kept holding serve with ease, and dropping just two points in the rest of the set.

The second set turned out to be even easier as Kudermetova broke twice in two games to take a 4-0 lead. While Garcia did throw everything at her opponent after that and broke back once, she first had to save a match-point on her own serve before Kudermetova closed it out in the 10th game of the set after saving three break-points.

Kudermetova has been such form that by the sound of things, the only player who looks like could challenge Barty on clay other than Aryna Sabalenka is her.

Barty v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

It’s surprising that Barty is 3/10 to win this given Kudermetova’s recent form and 13-2 record on clay this season. We can expect Kudermetova to win a set at the very least while those who want to take a higher chance can go for an upset win at 5/2.
