Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

This is a long-standing rivalry that began in 2012 with a qualifier at the French Open. Muguruza won that and followed that up with another win in the 2012 Wimbledon qualifiers too, but after that Svitolina leads 6-3 in main draws of WTA competitions.

On clay, it’s 1-1 with Muguruza having won their most recent contest at the 2019 French Open. She also defeated Svitolina at the 2020 Australian Open in what was their last meeting.

Svitolina Requires Three Sets against Anisimova

It wasn’t the most straightforward of wins but Svitolina came through in three sets against Amanda Anisimova to seal off her third round berth in Rome.

The world number six won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 40 minutes to ensure she continued to remain in the running to emulate her feat in 2017 and 2018 when she won back to back titles at the Italian Open.

Svitolina, who had an opening bye, broke Anisimova in the very first game and was 2-0 up before the American rattled off six games in a row to win the opening set. A stunned Svitolina then rallied from those three breaks of serves in the first set to take a 4-2 lead.

Another pair of breaks was exchanged before Svitolina broke for the fourth time in the set to level things out.

The third set looked to be going to script when Svitolina got the early break and held on to get a chance to serve out for the match at 5-3. And while she was broken at that stage, Svitolina came back to break again and seal the deal.

It could get a lot tougher against Muguruza.

Muguruza Stretched by Pera

We had a sense Muguruza could be initially stretched by Bernarda Pera in their second round match but didn’t quite expect what followed in their meeting.

In what turned out to be a shocker of a first set, Muguruza was broken four times to lose it 6-2 before she retaliated with three successive breaks to collect a bagel in the second set.

With the score tied at a set apiece, Muguruza then dropped her serve twice in the decider, with Pera serving to go 5-1 up.

The Spaniard, who had earlier crushed Patricia Maria Tig in her opener, stormed back with back to back breaks that levelled things out at 4-4 and with Pera serving to stay in the match at 5-6, Muguruza converted the only break-point she got in that game to pocket the tie.

While Muguruza did look a tad rusty in this encounter enduring six breaks of serves in the match, that was to be expected given her time away from the sport. She should soon get back to her best.

Svitolina v Muguruza Prediction and Tip

Muguruza is 4/6 to win this and despite her rustiness issues from being away because of injury, we are backing the world number 12 to clinch this.
