Andrey Rublev v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
The only meeting between these players was at the ATP 500 finals in Vienna. Rublev won that in straight sets.

After a phenomenal 2020 winning five titles, making his first ever Tour Finals and breaking into the top eight in the ATP rankings, Rublev continued his strong run of form at the start of the season too, leading Russia to the finals of the ATP Cup. The Russian was in ominous form at the Australian Open too, until the quarter-finals where he ran into compatriot Daniil Medvedev and lost in straight sets.
Rublev added to his title count at Rotterdam winning another ATP 500, but despite several strong runs thereafter (Doha, Dubai. Miami), he fell short on each occasion in the semi-finals.
Having won the ATP 500 on the Hamburg clay last year, Rublev started the clay season looking confident defeating Rafa Nadal at Monte Carlo and making the finals, but falling short against first time Masters 1000 winner Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Russian fell in the Barcelona quarter-finals against Jannik Sinner and will be disappointed at his loss in Madrid last week against big serving American John Isner.
Rublev came into Rome looking at a deep run that would set him up well for the French Open which is now around the corner. However, the Russian did not look his smooth self since Madrid and was again pushed by German Jan-Lennard Struff who won the first set in the tie-break but Rublev came back strong to close out the match 6-1,6-4.
Up against Agut once again for the third time this season, Rublev played with plenty of grit as he dominated the big points to set up a straight sets win 6-4,6-4. The Russian is in his eighth quarter-final of the year and will be looking at a deep run here this weekend

Big Sonego Victory Against Thiem
26-year-old Italian Lorenzo Sonego made a name for himself by dispatching Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the 2020 ATP 500 in Vienna.
While the 2021 season did not start too well, with only a Montpellier ATP 250 quarter-final of note, the Italian has hit better form on the slower clay. Sonego won the Sardegna Open at the start of the European clay swing which enabled him to break into the top 30 in the ATP world rankings.
Despite an early loss at Monte Carlo to Alexander Zverev, Sonego has looked good this week. Defeating Gael Monfils is the second round in three sets was a noteworthy result but that was followed by an epic match against Dominic Thiem where Sonego came back from match-point down to break back in the final set and clinch the match and a final eight spot in a third set tiebreak.
Cheered on by fans now in attendance, the Italian will have a lot on his side during his quarter-final clash against Russian Andre Rublev.
Rublev v Sonego Prediction and Tip
Sonego has had a great week, with two big wins but the run ends here. Rublev has been in very good touch all season long and will navigate the young Italian well enough to make the final four here in Rome.
