Paul Inching Towards Top 50

Around two years ago, Paul was ranked outside the top 200 on the ATP charts. 25 months on, he is one good tournament showing away from breaking into the top 50 and he kick-starts this competition with a straightforward opening round encounter.

Paul’s form this year has been decent but other than a quarterfinal appearance at the Rotterdam Open where he defeated Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Bublik, the American hasn’t won back to back main draw matches.

More recently, on clay, Paul started off with a first round loss at Cagliari before registering back to back wins against Pedro Martinez in the first rounds of Monte-Carlo and Madrid Masters. He then lost in the second at both those tournaments before qualifying for the Italian Open but falling to Roberto Bautista-Agut/

Up against a former world number five and a current struggler, Paul will fancy his chances here.

Tsonga 1-6 Since End of 2019 Season

When Tsonga ended his 2019 season, he wouldn’t have guessed how the best part of the following two years would go for him. Injuries, pandemic and poor form have all come together to allow him a chance to play just seven main draw matches since then.

And that’s not all; he has won just one of them.

That sole win came in Marseille earlier this year when he overcame Feliciano Lopez in the first round but other than that, the Frenchman has suffered four defeats across four tournaments.

And it’s not just about possessing a 1-4 record this season that’s bit of an issue but the fact Tsonga has played just four of them in the first place.

Can Tsonga get something going here?

Paul v Tsonga Prediction and Tip

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to have Tsonga starting out at 5/2 to win this, such has been his struggle in recent times. Backing him to win a set here though.

Tip: Tsonga to win a set – Yes: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
