Bencic is ranked 11th at the moment but it would be fair to say her performances in recent times should have pushed her lower than that had it not been for the tweaked ranking system.
The Swiss player did make it to the final of the Adelaide International earlier this season but since that defeat to Iga Swiatek in that one, Bencic has struggled to get going.
In the 13 matches she has played since, Bencic has won just six and featured in only one quarterfinal from seven attempts. That came in Madrid where she had bit of a luck of the draw but a win against Ons Jabeur would have given her some hope.
Because an opening defeat in her first competition on clay this season to Paula Badosa, a second round loss at Stuttgart against Ekaterina Alexandrova and a first round defeat to Kristina Mladenovic in Rome don’t give Bencic a lot of hope otherwise coming into this French Open.
The question is if Bencic can better her best-ever at Roland-Garros – a third round defeat in 2019.

Podoroska, a 2020 French Open Semifinalist
Clay has been Podoroska’s go-to surface and that was on display last season when the Argentine featured in a plethora of tournaments on red dirt after the pandemic break. More vitally, she excelled at most of them, culminating in a semifinal appearance at the French Open after starting out as a qualifier.
This year, Podoroska after having acquired enough ranking points to make a direct entry into the Italian Open, reached the third round in that competition.
What more, the Argentine managed to do that on the back of a stunning straight-set win over Serena Williams in the second round before falling to Petra Martic. Another quarterfinal appearance at Belgrade followed soon after which has now taken Podoroska to her career-best ranking of 42nd in the world.
Last year, Podoroska was an unknown but starts off as more of a known face along with the pressure of defending all those points from the previous French Open. Will that, along with a tough first round match, play a part?

Here’s another interesting one. Podoroska has done enough on clay to come into the match on even terms with Bencic while the latter’s higher ranking but lack of form means she cannot be totally ignored.
