Gael Monfils v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head
The pair have net six times before, and Monfils leads their head to head series by four matches to two.
He won their first match on clay in Hamburg in 2011, and the next two matches on hard courts at the Indian Wells Masters in 2016 and then again in 2019.
There were three more meetings in 2019 – the Spaniard won at the Rome Masters and in Shenzhen, but sandwiched between those two, was a Monfils victory at the US Open.
Monfils Recently Ended Long Losing Run
Monfils reached the semi-finals in his home event in 2008, reached the quarter-final there again the following year, and once more in 2014.
However, he has just come to the end of a 15-month losing run that stretched back to Dubai, 2020 suffering a series of first round defeats, including in Paris last September, when he was beaten by Alexander Bublik.
That sequence finally came to an end on home soil in Lyon where he managed to overcome the challenge of the Brazilian lucky loser Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets. Things though returned to the norm in his next match – he was defeated by Yoshida Nishioka of Japan in a third set tie-break.
Most recently he competed in Belgrade but suffered another first-round defeat to the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the world 98. More worrying for his fans was the sight of him undergoing an extensive medical time-out in the middle of the match, and it is hoped that he is fit for Paris.
Monfils now faces a very tricky opening opponent here.

Ramos-Vinolas Has Two Finals Already in 2021
The left-handed Spaniard was a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2016, and reached the fourth round the following year.
He is the winner of three ATP career titles, all of them on clay, with his most recent victory coming earlier this month when he came from behind to beat Cameron Norrie in the final of the Estoril Open.
That was his second final of 2021 – he was beaten, also on clay, at the last stage of the Cordoba Open in February.
Since Estoril he entered the Madrid Open, but was beaten in the second round, losing to Federico Delbonis of Argentina in two close sets.
And earlier this week he suffered a surprise first round defeat in Parma, losing in three sets to the Slovakian Norbert Gombos the world 87.
Monfils v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip
This is a very tough draw for the home favourite to get in the first round, finding himself playing a clay court specialist who has already been in two finals this year, winning one of them.
He can rely on the support of the limited number of fans allowed in the stands, but that is unlikely to be enough for him to find his old form.
