John Isner v Sam Querrey Head to Head
The pair have met eight times before, and Querrey leads their head to head series by five matches to three.
Three of those matches were in 2010, Querrey winning in Memphis and the clay of Belgrade, and Isner emerging victorious at Indian Wells.
Querrey also won both their matches in 2015 – in Memphis again and in Cincinnati. The following year, Isner won in Auckland, and it was Querrey’s turn in Cincinnati once more in 2018.
Their last encounter was two years ago in Acapulco, Isner winning on that occasion.
Isner Drops Out of Top 30
Isner has made the fourth round in Paris three times, most recently In 2018, even though it does not suit his natural game.
Last month he dropped out of the top 30 for the first time in ten years, meaning that there was no American in the top 30 of the world, something that had not happened for nearly half a century.
In part this has been due to the Americans playing schedule – a well-known anti-vaxxer, he decided not to travel to Australia earlier this year and subject himself to the quarantine requirements.
Instead, he chose to stay close to home, competing in Delray Beach and Acapulco, where he made the second round on each occasion.
He went one better in Miami, and then, on his one and only foray so far in 2021 on to European clay, he made the semi-finals in Madrid, claiming the scalps of Roberto Bautista-Agut and Alexander Bublik along the way, before losing eventually to Dominic Thiem.
He has not played since.

Querrey’s Got a Poor Record in Paris
Querrey has a poor record in Paris, never having been beyond the second round here in nine previous attempts.
That does not mean he cannot play on clay – he won the Italian Masters in 2011 and was a semi-finalist in Madrid the same year, but those achievements were a decade ago, at a time when he was ranked as high as 11 in the world..
Like Isner, he has had his own brush with Covid regulations in the past year – he was fined heavily by the ATP after leaving a tournament early on a private jet with his wife and child.
Querrey has played comparatively little tennis so far in 2021 and won only two matches, in the first round of Delray Beach and the Melbourne warm-up event, the Great Ocean Road Open.
Since then though his record is played four and lost four, including his only match on clay so far, a first round defeat in Parma this week to the Japanese player Yoshida Nishioka.
Isner v Querrey Prediction and Tip
Anybody expecting a classic clay court match with long rallies and extended games is likely to be disappointed in this match between two big servers. The pints will likely be short and both men will be looking to dominate on serve.
Querrey has the better head to head record, but only one of their previous matches has been on clay, and that was a long time ago. Neither comes into this event with much practice on clay, but Isner’s exploits in Madrid suggest he will have the edge.
Tip: Isner to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
