Alexander Zverev v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Zverev and Safiullin have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Zverev Survives Otte Challenge

A win over Rafael Nadal, another over Dominic Thiem and then against Matteo Berrettini other than a few others over tricky opponents on clay this season have made Zverev one of the players to watch out this. But then a first round encounter like the one he had against Oscar Otte makes one wonder if the German has the consistency to go the distance.

Because in a match Zverev began at 3/100 odds to win against a qualifier, he was down two sets to love.

And while Otte admittedly played some of his best tennis in the first two sets, it was a stunning collapse from Zverev who was broken four times in those opening sets.

Fortunately for the higher-ranked German, he slowly got back into rhythm in the third set and once he had got hold of his own serve and broken Otte twice, there was no looking back. Two more breaks followed in the fourth set and by this time Otte’s confidence had been shattered as he withered away to a 6-0 defeat in the final set.

Zverev faces another qualifier in the second round and would hope he ups the ante this time.

Safiullin Resists Taberner Counterattack

This is just Safiullin’s second main draw appearance at a Grand Slam and he has already emulated his second round showing that he had managed at his first, i.e. at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Safiullin was drawn to play fellow qualifier Carlos Taberner and needed four sets to get past him in a match lasting two hours and 48 minutes.

The 181st-ranked Russian got himself an early break, dropped serve soon after, missed a couple of set-points before clinching the first set in a tie-breaker. Taberner, however, looked to have shrugged that off and when he cruised past Safiullin in the second set, after taking a 5-0 lead in it, it looked like the tide had turned.

Undeterred, Safiullin reversed the flow in a stunning fashion as he broke the Spaniard three times in a row without facing a single break-point on his own serve in the third set. And soon after a break in the fourth game of the fourth set put him on the path of a win.

Things could be a lot different against Zverev but if Safiullin can carry the same mental toughness that he had against Taberner, he could give his German opponent a bit of a fight too.

Zverev v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

At 1/20, Zverev is a firm favourite but those odds don’t do justice to some of the inconsistencies in his game, especially his serve which was a struggle for him in round one. Look at the games handicap for this one.

Tip: Games Handicap Safiullin +8.5: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
