Cameron Norrie v Lloyd Harris Head to Head

Norrie and Harris have not played each other before this. Their second-round match at Roland Garros will be their first meeting of any kind on tour.

Norrie Upends Fratangelo

A day after the top-ranked British players in both men’s and women’s in singles competition bowed out, Cameron Norrie preserved Great Britain’s participation and interest at the French Open.

Norrie, undoubtedly one of the most in-form players at this year’s European clay swing, fought the nerves and a tenacious qualifier in Bjorn Fratangelo, winning 7-5 7-6 6-2 in precisely two and half hours to reach the second round of the French Open for the second time.

The British World No. 45 has a habit of losing to lower-ranked opponents at Roland Garros, as evident in his previous two visits. And in Fratangelo, he came up against a determined qualifier ranked over 150 spots below him in the rankings.

Norrie was engulfed by nerves having been in this trap before. But he had learned a great deal. The match hinged on two key points which happened in the second set tiebreak. The British lefty had already established a one-set lead by then, and the tiebreak score was 5-5 in the second when he played a backpass down the line and an ace to follow it up.

Fratangelo’s self-belief was extinguished and Norrie easily won the third set. Overall the Brit fired nine aces, and saved nine out of 12 breakpoints.

Harris Registers Sonego Upset

Lloyd Harris was 5/1 to beat Lorenzo Sonego, but he cruised into the second round in an emphatic manner. The Italian was seeded at 26th at the tournament but was mildly below his usual best.

Harris won a tense opening set, breaking serve in 11th game, and served his way into a one-set lead. Sonego –  a premier performer on clay – manufactured seven break chances in the match. Remarkably, he converted just one of those, with Harris producing clutch serves in the decisive moments.

Harris made his move midway through the second set at 3-3, garnering a break of serve and proceeded to build a two-set lead. The Italian who is in the midst of a career-best season was taken by surprise at the quality returning by the South African.

Harris fired 40 winners in total as he secured the lone break of serve in the third set to confirm his progress. He also won over 70% of first-serve points.

Norrie v Harris Prediction and Tip

Norrie has been on terrier on this surface, but Harris’ unwavering self-belief is a key feature in his game that he will toil with the best even on his worst surface. The South African should make this close.
