Hurkacz Wishing Away Clay Form

After winning his first ever Masters 1000 title, Hurkacz had come into the clay swing with the kind of confidence he would have rarely felt before. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t quite translate into the kind of form the Polish player would have liked.

Because Hurkacz featured in four clay court competitions including three Masters and lost all but one of his five matches. In fact, he enters the grass swing on the back of a four-match losing streak.

Hurkacz, who is 24, hasn’t played a lot on grass either. In fact even at the lower level, Challenger and Futures competitions included he featured in just one tournament and followed that up with four on the ATP circuit.

His best performance came at Wimbledon in 2019 when he made round three, having earlier appeared at the Eastbourne quarterfinal as well. Can he return back to grass with the kind of form he had on hard court earlier this season?

Stricker Edges Out Albot

He wasn’t the favourite coming into his opening round match here against Radu Albot but the 335th-ranked Stricker showed the kind of perseverance he had shown at Geneva – his last competition.

There, he had made as far as the quarterfinals with wins over Marton Fucsovics and Marin Cilic, and has followed that up with his third career win in the first round here.

Stricker defeated Albot in straight sets but two hard-fought ones in Stuttgart, both of which went into a tie-breaker. The match lasted an hour and 53 minutes, saw Stricker come back from being a break down on two separate occasions in the first set before settling in nicely with his serve to clinch a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) win.

Can he now overcome Hurkacz in what will be another big win of his career?
