Humbert Makes Back to Back Quarterfinals

So disastrous has been the competition in Halle for seeded players that not too many have survived the first two rounds. Humbert ensured Alexander Zverev was another such big name to fall by the wayside he carved out a three-set win over the third seed and march into his second successive grass court quarterfinal.

Humbert won 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3 to stun his German opponent, and later called it the biggest win of his career.

In that same post-match interview, Humbert also explained he had been working on the mental aspect of his game and kept pushing on instead of throwing in the towel even when things weren’t going his way in the match.

The world number 31, who had earlier needed a three-setter against Sam Querrey in the first round, was a losing quarterfinalist at the Stuttgart Open played last week. Can he now go one step further in this week’s grass court competition?

Korda Comes Back to Win against Nishikori

While it wasn’t the easiest wins and needed Korda to survive three sets and two hours and 37 minutes on court, he did come through in the end against Kei Nishikori.

In a match in which both players lost their serve twice, it was Korda’s ability to break at the most crucial time that helped him seal off the win. He pouched the match 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to march into the quarterfinal of his first tournament on grass.

With the match tied at a set apiece, these two players saved break-points in the first two games and then again in the fifth and sixth games. It took Korda till the 11th game to get himself a decisive break before serving it out.

Korda, who is in the first career grass court competition here in Halle, will look to continue his form and try and surprise a few here.
