This will be the first time that the World No. 6 Svitolina will meet the World No. 33 Badosa.

Form a Concern for Svitolina

Outplayed by Barbora Krejcikova at the French Open and outclassed by Ekaterina Alexandrova in her first match on grass this year, Elina Svitolina brings poor form to Eastbourne this week and the fact that the Ukrainian has lost all three of her previous matches at Eastbourne won’t give her too much confidence going in against an in-form player in Paula Badosa.

The 26-year-old, who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2019, lost in the qualifying round in Eastbourne in 2013 and in the Round of 32 in 2015 and 2019 after receiving first-round byes in both the years.

The 2018 WTA Finals champion and 2019 runner-up, Svitolina has won 15 career titles from 18 finals, but is yet to make it to a final this year. She did reach the semifinals in Miami and Stuttgart but on both the occasions was halted by No. 1 Ash Barty, who beat her in straight sets in the WTA 1000 tournament and needed three in the WTA 500.

The Ukrainian also reached four quarterfinals this year, falling to Veronika Kudermetova in Abu Dhabi, Elise Mertens at the Gippsland Trophy, Victoria Azarenka in Doha and Iga Swiatek in Rome.

The former No. 3, who was dumped out of the third round at Roland Garros, was beaten by Alexandrova in straight sets in Berlin last week. The Russian won the first set with ease and then saved seven set points in the second to beat the Ukrainian on her return to grass, where she has a 15-16 overall career record.

Can Badosa Replicate Her Clay Form on Grass?

The 23-year-old Spaniard doesn’t have a huge reputation on grass, but she has been in great touch this year and will be looking to bring that form to grass courts as well.

Badosa is 23-8 this year. She has won a maiden title, reached two semifinals and a major quarterfinal in the last four tournaments and will look to keep the momentum going in Eastbourne.

Beginning the season with a Round-of-16 finish in Abu Dhabi, Badosa reached her first semifinal of the year in Lyon, which she lost to Clara Tauson. The World No. 33’s next final four appearance came in Charleston, where she knocked out Belinda Bencic in the second round and Ash Barty in the quarterfinals before falling to Veronika Kodermetova.

She followed the Charleston run with a run to the semifinals in Madrid as well, beating Bencic once again but couldn’t find a way past Barty a second time.

The Spaniard next featured in Belgrade, winning the Serbia Open title after Ana Konjuh retired while trailing 6-2, 2-0 in the final.

Badosa capped off the superb clay season with her first major quarterfinal appearance, but couldn’t advance further after being outlasted by Tamara Zidansek.

Svitolina v Badosa Prediction and Tip

On grass, Svitolina will be the favourite to advance. She has more experience on the surface and Badosa has barely played on grass. But Badosa is in terrific form and Svitolina looked a bit out of sorts in her last two matches. Calls for an exciting contest.
