Fabio Fognini v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

The pair have played each other no less than ten times before, and Fognini leads their head-to-head record by 8 wins to two. That includes their one previous meeting on grass in Eastbourne in 2012, Fognini winning in three sets. The Spaniard though has won their last two matches – in Vienna in 2016, and Rio a year later.

Fognini’s Dislike of Wimbledon

Fognini, who is never one to shy away from controversy, has made his feelings about Wimbledon very clear in the past. On his last visit here in 2019 he was fined heavily after wishing that a bomb would blow the whole place up, and he also cut his knuckles after punching his own racquet in the grass.

Despite that and the fact that he is much happier on his native clay, he does not have too bad a record at the All-England Club, having reached the third round – albeit no further – on five previous occasions.

Earlier this year he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, but that was something of a highwater mark so far in 2021 for the Italian, who has struggled to find the form that has earned him 9 senior ATP career titles.

His only previous tournament this year on grass was at Queen’s, were he beat Yen-Hsun-Lu of Taiwan in the first round before losing to Marin Cilic in the second, beaten in straight sets.

Ramos-Vinolas Needs Turnaround on Grass

Like Fognini, Ramos-Vinolas is much more at home on a clay court, having won this third senior career title in Estoril last month, beating Cameron Norrie in three sets in the fianl. That was his tenth final and all but one of those has been on clay.

He has though two third round appearances at Wimbledon to his name, although he has failed to progress beyond the first round on his last two visits.

The Spaniard’s preparation for this year’s tournament has not been ideal, however.

Since reaching the second round in Madrid, he has suffered four successive defeats, including at the French Open, where his campaign in Paris did not get beyond the first round stage, losing in four sets to local favourite Gael Monfils.

Nor has his grass court season been any better so far. He was beaten by Cameron Norrie at Queen’s despite winning the firsts et, and at Eastbourne, he lost to the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri in straight sets.

Fognini v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip

Although both men would be much happier if this match were to be played on a  clay court, Fognini will begin the slight favourite because of his superior head to head record, and consistent Wimbledon record.
