Shapovalov Yet to Make a Mark at Wimbledon

A quarterfinalist in Stuttgart and a semifinalist at Queen’s, Denis Shapovalov will be happy to come to Wimbledon with a 4-2 record on grass this season. The 22-year-old Canadian had won just three matches and lost nine on the surface before 2021 and that included two first-round exits and one second-round defeat at Wimbledon.

Ranked No. 12 in the world, Shapovalov lost to Ricardas Berankis in the opening round at Wimbledon in 2019. His registered his only win in the tournament in 2018, defeating Jeremy Chardy in the first round before falling to Benoit Paire.

The left-hander, who won his only career title in Stockholm in 2019, has an 18-13 overall record this season. He reached his third ATP final and first on clay in Geneva earlier this year, but fell to Casper Ruud in the final. The 2019 Paris Masters runner-up also featured in two semifinals this year, falling to Lloyd Harris in Dubai and Cameron Norrie at Queen’s.

Having started off well on grass this season, Shapovalov will be hoping for a better showing at Wimbledon this year.

Kohlschreiber Making a 16th Main Draw Appearance

Shapovalov will face 2012 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round. The German comes to this year’s tournament with a 4-3 record this season.

Ranked 115th in the world, the 37-year-old has featured in three tour-level events this year, falling to Domink Koepfer in the first round in Munich; reaching the third round at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at the Halle Open.

Kohlschreiber defeated Fernando Verdasco and Aslan Karatsev at the French Open before falling to David Schwartzman. At Halle, the German scored victories over Austria’s Jurij Rodionov and France’s Corentin Moutet to reach a quarterfinal for the first time in two years, however, he couldn’t reach the semis after falling to Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

This will be a 16th main draw appearance for the German at Wimbledon, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2012 for his best-ever Grand Slam showing. He has had four third-round finishes, a second-round finish and nine first-round defeats at the All England Club.

Kohlschreiber has played in 18 career finals, winning eight titles, but hasn’t reached a title clash since losing to Alexander Zverev at the BMW Open final in 2018.

Shapovalov v Kohlschreiber Prediction and Tip

The Canadian may have had issues on grass before, but he seems to have started well this season and will be eager to make an impression at Wimbledon. However, he faces a player who has loads of experience on the surface and could be a tricky opponent to face first up. Expect Shapovalov to win and advance, but Kohlschreiber to at least win a set.

Tip: Shapovalov to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
