Rybakina Comes into Her Own against Mladenovic

It wasn’t expected to be a very straightforward win for Rybakina but clearly her showing at Eastbourne in the week gone by seemed to have assisted her confidence. A semifinalist at Eastbourne, Rybakina eased to a straight set win over Kristina Mladenovic in her opener here at Wimbledon.

Rybakina needed only 56 minutes to get past her French opponent, winning 6-4, 6-0 to march into the second round, in turn winning her first ever match on the hallowed grass of Wimbledon.

The Kazakh world number 20 earned herself an early break in the third game of the opening set and from there on faced no real trouble in sealing off Mladenovic’s escape routes. There were no break-points on Rybakina’s serve, and while she missed one set-point in the ninth game, she converted the first set-point on her own serve in the following game to pocket the lead.

The second set was a piece of cake for Rybakina, who broke Mladenovic thrice and dropped just two games on her own serve to complete the win. A third round spot would be hers for the taking if she can play the way she did against her unheralded second round opponent.

Liu in a Thrilling Opening Win

She is all of 21 years of age and hasn’t been around on the circuit for too long but Liu showed remarkable nerves in her opening round match against Misaki Doi to come through in a thriller.

Liu defeated Doi from a set down in an opening round match that lasted two hours and two hours and 46 minutes.

The American shrugged off the easy loss of the first set by breaking Doi twice in the second and then took a 4-2 lead in the final set. She then had a match-point on Doi’s serve at 3-5, but her opponent came back to save that and broke Liu as she served for the match at 5-4.

Not to be outdone, Liu got a decisive break in the 15th game of the final set and this time around there was no looking back as the 120th-ranked player completed the victory off her second match-point.

Liu had earlier surprised Astra Sharma in the qualifiers in a similar manner from a set down. Primarily a clay-court specialist – she has won six ITF titles on it – it now remains to be seen how much of a challenge would she pose to a player exactly 100 ranking places ahead of her.

Rybakina v Liu Prediction and Tip

While Liu has shown great fighting capabilities, would those be enough to challenge? Would those even be enough to win a set? We believe otherwise with Rybakina expected to run away with this encounter in straight sets.

Tip: Rybakina to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
