Andrey Rublev v Lloyd Harris  Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between both players on the tour. Their only meeting was in the final of the ATP 250 in Adelaide in 2020, which Rublev won dropping only three games.

Rublev Strong After Shaky Start In Opener

Andrey Rublev has had a strong run since he last played on the grass courts of Wimbledon in 2019.  He has not been past the second round at the All England Tennis Club with that being his best performance both in 2017 and 2019.

But, since Wimbledon 2019,  Rublev had a strong 2020 winning five titles and breaking into the top  eight in the ATP rankings. Rublev continued his strong run of form at the start of the season too, leading Russia to the finals of the ATP Cup, winning the Rotterdam ATP 500, and making the semi-finals and quarter-finals of a number of tournaments, including the Aussie Open final eight.

After a shock opening round loss at the French Open, Rublev arrived on the grass courts of Halle low on confidence but determined and did well to make the final before losing to Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

Coming to Wimbledon, the Russian was up against Argentine veteran Federico Delbonis. Rublev looked out of sorts with 12 unforced errors in set one as Delbonis closed the set 6-4. Rublev broke early in the second, but when Delbonis equalled the set, it looked like the Russian was feeling the pressure and maybe headed to another early exit.

Rublev tightened his game thereafter, and once he won the second set 6-4, he only dropped three games thereafter to close out a four set win and move on to the second round.

Good Season For Harris Looking To Get Momentum On Grass

Llloyd Harris broke into the top 50 of the ATP rankings largely due to his performances on hard court tournaments earlier this year. A third round at the Australian Open but more importantly, making the final of the ATP Dubai 2021 after starting out as a qualifier propelled him towards his career-best. The latter included wins against Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov before he fell to Aslan Karatsev.

Unfortunately for Harris, his performances on clay were not much to write about and coming into the French Open with a 2-8 record did not help either.  Coming to grass he appeared at Stuttgart, Halle and Mallorca but did not get any momentum going and recorded three wins across the tournaments in aggregate.

Up against Ricardis Berankis in the opener here, it was tricky with the rain delays with the match spread over two days. The South African started well winning the first two sets and although Berankis put up a good fight after the resumption in the third, Harris hung in to win in straight sets in a third set tie-break and record his first ever win at Wimbledon.

Confident after an opening round win, the South African will not have much time to recover for the next round against a much more difficult opponent and will be well aware that he needs to be at his best for that encounter.

Rublev v Prediction and Tip

Harris had a good run earlier in the year, but the end of clay and the grass warm-up was not encouraging. However, he has the potential to cause a few problems for Rublev, who has not played too much on grass and looked shaky early in his first round against Delbonis. However, one can expect Rublev to pull through in a well fought four setter.
