Cristian Garin v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

Cristian Garin and Pedro Martinez have not played each other at any level before this.

Garin Ends Polmans’ Run

Cristian Garin is at his most vulnerable surroundings on the lawns, and so it proved once more as he dug himself out of a hole to end Australia’s Marc Polmans’ bid to reach the third round.

Polmans was on a four-match winning streak at the Championships, having navigated his way through three qualifying matches in Roehampton. That includes an epic final round win in qualifying which he won 11-9 in the decider against Ramkumar Ramanathan.

Garin won the three-hour 21-minute contest by the symmetrical scoreline of 7-6 2-6 6-2 7-6. His winners to unforced errors ratio (53 to 43) was substantially better to Polmans (35 to 49), and ultimately proved decisive in the two tiebreaks in the first and fourth sets.

The quarter has opened up nicely for the Chilean to make the second week of the grass-court Slam for the first time, and a potential fourth-round meeting against Novak Djokovic awaits. Can he take advantage when he faces clay-court campaigner Pedro Martinez?

Martinez Shocks Monfils to Make Third Round

Prior to this year’s Wimbledon, Pedro Martinez had only ever played two matches on grass at pro level. Those were in Roehampton at SW15, the staging of qualification matches before the big battleground at Sw19.

Martinez did not even warrant a place at the preliminary events on the grass in the past few weeks due to his low ranking. He came to Wimbledon with just one match under his belt on the lawns – a first-round defeat in qualifying in Mallorca.

He was a whopping 5/1 to win his first-round match against Stefano Travaglia, but defied the odds to defeat the Italian. And then proceeded to beat Gael Monfils – who in fairness is only 13th seed by name – to reach the third round.

Monfils has had a shocking year by his own lofty standards. And this latest defeat extends his terrible run of results to 3-9 for the season. Martinez served impeccably and was not cowed by the occasion. He won 70% of first-serve points and saved an impressive nine out of 12 breakpoints to win 6-3 6-4 4-6 7-6 in a little over three hours.

The Spaniard ranked 107 in the world, has now reached the third round at three of the four Majors.

Garin v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Hands up if you had Garin and Martinez locking horns in the third round at Wimbledon. But that is not really much of a debate right now as both players have earned their places to be at this stage. The Chilean should naturally come in as the favorite, but we are backing both players to win a set here.
