No. 22 seed Daniel Evans cruised into the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday, defeating Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in the second round in straight sets.

Evans, who didn’t drop a set in the first round either, needed an hour and 56 minutes to beat the Serb 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Both players hit 22 winners in the contest, but Evans had just 26 unforced errors compared to Lajovic’s 37.

Evans, who wasn’t broken once by Feliciano Lopez in the first round, saved five of seven break points against Lajovic, converting six of nine.

In the opening round, Evans had beaten the0 39-year-old Spaniard 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 7-5.

Making a sixth main draw appearance in his home slam, Evans has never gone past the third round, having also reached the stage in 2016 and 2019.

Wednesday’s win improved the Briton to 16-11 this year.

Evans, who lost in the finals in Sydney in 2017 and at Delray Beach in 2019, finally captured his first ATP title after he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final of the Murray River Open earlier this year.

In another massive achievement this year, Evans defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic en-route a first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal at Monte-Carlo. Having never gone past the second round of a Masters 1000 event, Evans defeated Lajovic and Hubart Hurkacz in the first two rounds, before beating Djokovic 6-4, 7-5.

Evans then defeated David Goffin in the quarterfinals but fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.

Korda Continues to Impress on Debut

Facing Evans in the third round will be America’s Sebastian Korda, who is slowly beginning to make an impact in the majors.

Having reached the fourth round of the French Open on debut last year, Korda has now made it to the third round in his first appearance at the All England Club.

Coached by dad Petr Korda, a former World No. 2, Sebastian entered the Round of 32 with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 win over French qualifier Antoine Hoang on Wednesday.

It was a hard fought win, as the World No. 50 toiled for two hours and 48 minutes before beating the World No. 156.

In his opening round on Tuesday, Korda had battled past Australia’s Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5) in three hours and 25 minutes.

Making his grass court debut this season, Korda had reached the quarterfinals at Halle by winning his first two matches. The American was also a finalist at Delray Beach, but finished runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz.
