Andrey Rublev v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

World No. 7 Rublev has played Marton Fucsovics seven times before this. Remarkably four of those meetings have taken place in the current season, in which the Russian has triumphed in all of them. Fucsovics has two wins in the head-to-head, both coming on clay, including a singles rubber in 2017 Davis Cup.

Their fourth-round match at Wimbledon will be their first meeting at any level on grass.

Awe-Inspiring Rublev Makes Second Week at Wimbledon

For the first time in what must feel like an eternity, Andrey Rublev will know what it is like to play in the second week of the grass-court Major.

Rublev had never gone beyond the second round in his Wimbledon career before, but in the midst of his best-ever season yet, the Russian was bound to upstage the previous years’ failures.

In fairness, Rublev did not have it all his way in the first week. He rallied past Argentina’s winning machine Federico Delbonis to win in four sets in his opener, and then upended Lloyd Harris quite easily in straight sets.

The fifth seed’s first acid test came in the third round against the Italian Fabio Fognini. On the back of an excellent week in Halle over 10 days ago, Rublev appeared to be cruising against the flamboyant Italian when he took a 6-3 4-2 lead. But Fognini hit back to win five of the next six games to level the match.

The third and fourth sets went awry for Fognini who struggled with a leg injury that required a medical timeout. Rublev took advantage and sealed his spot in the fourth round.

Fucsovics Knocks Off Schwartzman

It won’t be Rublev alone making a maiden appearance in the second week at Wimbledon, but his 2021 rival Marton Fucsovics will also be doing the same.

Fuscovics and Rublev’s rivalry has blossomed into a friendship with the pair having met four times already this year. And Fucsovics has had a treacherous draw in his path to the fourth round.

The Hungarian launched his Wimbledon campaign with a stunning upset of the 19th seed Jannik Sinner in the first round. That win served as a catalyst for Fucsovics’ ever-growing confidence. Victories over Jiri Vesely (via a retirement while leading 6-3 5-4) and Diego Schwartzman followed with aplomb.

His win over Schwartzman, in particular, was one of the biggest in his Grand Slam career (along with beating Medvedev at last year’s French Open). He bullied Schwartzman in baseline exchanges and gave very few opportunities behind his serve.

Fucsovics broke the Argentine eight times and won 73% of his first-serve points.

Rublev v Fuscovics Prediction and Tip

For Fucsovics to spring an upset, he will need to handle pace brilliantly and redirect it with depth. But that is easier said than done especially on grass when decision-making is almost instantaneous. With that said, the Hungarian hasn’t looked remotely close to solve the Rublev puzzle this year and it is hard to see him getting the job done on Monday.
