Daniil Medvedev v Hurbert Hurkacz

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev had one foot out of the tournament when he trailed Croatia’s Marin Cilic by two sets to love in the previous round. But he produced a superb comeback to win in five sets. Never before had the Russian fought back from such a deficit in a Grand Slam.

And his task of becoming the new World No. 1 will only get harder from now on. He has a realistic chance, and that is to win the title, or reach the final and hope Novak Djokovic does not get there.

But before Medvedev ponders on his quest to become tennis’ top dog next week, he will need to break down the seemingly unbreakable Hubert Hurkacz.

The Pole has not dropped a single service game or set en route to the Round of 16, which is quite a feat. But the oddsmakers have not been so kind which is understandable.

Medvedev will be Hurkacz’s first seeded opponent and a substantial upgrade in that. And we reckon the Russian will draw a lot of confidence from that thrilling five-set win over Cilic on Friday. But for Hurkacz, winning a set is a no-brainer here.

Andrey Rublev v Marton Fucsovics

It seems Andrey Rublev and Marton Fucsovics cannot avoid each other in tennis draws.

The theme in their rivalry – which includes four meetings in 2021 (three to be precise, with the Hungarian pulling out in Doha) – is that Fucsovics does all the good work and it all comes crashing down like a ton of bricks when he plays Rublev.

With victories over Jannik Sinner and Diego Schwartzman in the opening week, Fucsovics has played out of his skin to reach the fourth round and is now eyeing an unlikely maiden quarterfinal at a Grand Slam. Could it really happen at the expense of Andrey Rublev who has been a thorn in his game this year?

Fucsovics has already claimed two top 10 victories in his career (beating Medvedev at the French Open last year and most recently Schwartzman), which in essence proves he is capable of playing top-tier tennis irrespective of his current ranking of World No. 48. Everything has clicked into gear for the Hungarian.

Rublev will still start as the clear favorite here, but this should be much closer than their recent meetings on hard courts.

Denis Shapovalov v Roberto Bautista Agut

It has been a good tournament for Canadian men’s players. Two of its highest seeds will play in the second week, and there is a very good chance that at least one of Denis Shapovalov or Felix Auger-Aliassime will reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

For Shapovalov, after a poignant late withdrawal at the French Open due to injury, he has made up for the lost time at SW19. In fact, he has been in scintillating form since the start of the grass-court season, and with each passing week, his level keeps getting better and better.

Seeded 10th this fortnight, the 22-year-old won his third-round match against former World No.1 Andy Murray in emphatic fashion. And in the process, he may well have condemned Murray to his final loss in possibly his last-ever Wimbledon.

Shapovalov’s raw power got the better of Murray. He was not cowed by the occasion nor the opponent on his Centre Court debut. So how will he fare against the top-seeded Spaniard at this year’s Championships?

There is no doubt that Bautista Agut will show resilience and resistance to the very end which is why he is likely to take at least a set here. However, Shapovalov is clocking one of the fastest first serves this fortnight, and his elegant one-handed backhand has been a moneyshot.
