Bernarda Pera v Katarzyna Kawa Head to Head

Kawa defeated Pera in the semifinal of the Baltic Open in 2019, while Pera won their only meeting at an ITF event in 2012.

Pera Has Lost the Last Five Main Draw Matches

World No. 74 Bernarda Pera comes to Hamburg with a 5-13 main draw record this year. The American left-hander has not won a main draw match since winning the first round match against Tamara Zidansek at the Italian Open.

Pera’s only victories since that win over the Slovenian came in the qualifying round at Eastbourne, where she defeated Britain’s Francesca Jones and America’s Shelby Rogers.

The 26-year-old lost to Garbine Muguruza in the second round of the Italian Open, and then made first round exits at Parma, Roland Garros, Eastbourne and Wimbledon, following defeats to  Sara Sorribes Tormo, Ashley Barty, Aryna Sabalenka and Nao Hibino respectively.

A nine-time winner and 11-time runner-up on the ITF circuit, Pera is most successful on clay and although she is 2-6 on dirt this season, she has an overall record of 18-17 on the surface. Her best runs on clay came in 2018 and 2019, when she went 6-4 and 9-4 respectively.

Pera is yet to win two main draw matches in a row this season. She has gone past the first round and fallen in the second on five occasions. She will be looking to find form in Hamburg.

Kawa Has Just Two Wins This Year

Facing Pera will be World No. 132 Katarzyna Kawa, who is also a clay-court specialist but is yet to make an impact at the highest level.

The 28-year-old, who has never broken into the top 100, with her highest ranking being 112, comes into the tournament not in the best of forms. She is 2-11 from all competitions, across levels.

What will be encouraging for Kawa though will be the fact that both those wins came in the month of June. Kawa defeated America’s Kristie Ahn in the first round of an ITF event in Great Britain and Italy’s Martina de Giiuseppe in the first qualifying round at Wimbledon last month.

A seven-time champion and seven-time runner-up on the ITF circuit, Kawa was a finalist at the WTA Baltic Open in 2019, going down fighting to Anasatasija Sevastova in three.

Pera v Kawa Prediction and Tip

Pera may have won just five main draw matches this year, she has done well in the qualifying rounds, winning six of them. Overall, she has an 11-14 record this year and will be a favourite against the Polish player in the first round. Expect Pera to win in straight sets.
