Taro Daniel v Elias Ymer Head to Head

At different levels and stages of tournaments, these players have faced off three times. In their only ATP main draw match that came at Gstaad in 2018, Daniel won in straight sets, but this was followed by back to back victories for Ymer – at the 2021 Australian Open qualifiers and Lyon Challenger this year.

Ymer Hunting for First Win of Season

He might have won a few matches on the Challenger circuit but Ymer’s record in ATP competitions has been underwhelming this season. And the Swede would so like to correct it in front of his home audience

Having featured in five ATP tournaments including the three Grand Slams, Ymer qualified for Australian Open while getting knocked out in the qualifiers of the other two. And even when he did make it to the main draw in Melbourne in the two tournaments, Ymer fell in the opening round at both.

Ymer does have a solid game for clay, especially on the Challenger circuit. This year, he has made it to quarterfinals of six Challenger tournaments and all of them have come on clay.

Against an opponent ranked that much higher though, can he register his first main draw win of the year?

Daniel Has a Belgrade Semifinal Under His Belt

While on the one hand, Ymer has struggled to get going on the ATP circuit, Daniel’s season has gone much better. And like Ymer, clay has been his favourite too.

The Japanese player comes into this tournament, having lost in the opener at Salzburg Challenger but rather interestingly it was his only defeat that early in a Challenger competition in 2021.

Before that loss last week, he had also made it as far as the semifinal round in Lyon and Oeiras – both of which were on clay – but Daniel’s most special performance came in Belgrade. A former winner of Istanbul Open, Daniel reached the semifinal at Belgrade Open this year before losing to Matteo Berrettini in that encounter.

All in all, as far as confidence, rhythm and form go Daniel shouldn’t have a lot of worries here.

Daniel v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, bookmakers have Ymer as a favourite here but Daniel’s recent record could tilt this one in his favour. A tough win but Daniel to edge this contest for us.
