Paula Ormaechea v Ivana Jorovic Head to Head

These two players haven’t played each other on the WTA circuit before this but they did meet once at the ITF level. Ormaechea had won that match on the clay court of Podgorica in 2016.

Ormaechea’s Just Played on Clay This Year

Such has been Ormaechea’s preference for clay, she has managed not to play on any other surface this season. Qualifiers at WTA tournaments and ITF competitions have formed the majority of her appearances but Ormaechea has finally managed to win a match in the main draw of a WTA event.

Featuring in just her second main draw WTA tournament, Ormaechea registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Viktoriya Tomova, needing an hour and 29 minutes to get there.

It was Tomovo who drew first blood in the encounter before Ormaechea broke her three times in successive games to snatch the opening set. And while Tomova responded to an early break in the second set with one of her own, Ormaechea made it five breaks in a row to grab the lead again.

And a few games later, she converted her first match-point into a rare main draw victory.

Jorovic Looking to Claw Back

Once ranked 86th in the world, Jorovic has now fallen to 334th in a matter of two seasons as a combination of poor results and absences from the tour have combined to make difficult for the Serbian player.

This year, for instance, Jorovic had played just five matches coming into this tournament in Budapest, losing three and withdrawing from one of them because of fitness issues.

Her only win in 2021 had come on the ITF circuit, which is why a three-set win over Jacqueline Cristian would have helped her confidence-levels. And it wasn’t easy either with Jorovic needing three hours and 24 minutes and the saving of a match-point before winning 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) to claim a round two berth.

Question now is if she can push past a player like Ormaechea, who herself has been struggling in recent times?

Ormaechea v Jorovic Prediction and Tip

Ormaechea is 4/5 to win this, Jorovic starts off 1/1 to make the quarterfinal. We believe Jorovic could hold some advantage here giving her record on clay but we could also see a three-setter with both women desperate to make a rare quarterfinal.
