Putintseva Delivers the Best Run of 2021
Yulia Putintseva has done a good job of living up to the expectations of being a top-seeded player. Having reached the semifinal here in Budapest – her first one of the year – the Kazakh will now hope to go the distance and win her first singles title since the 2019 Nuremberg Cup.
So far in the Hungarian Tennis Grand Prix, Putintseva has beaten Ekaterine Gorgodze, Ana Konjuh, and most recently, Kateryna Kozlova to make it this far.
This semifinal appearance also marks her best result on the tour since reaching the quarterfinal back to back in the US Open and Italian Open last season. Back then, the 26-year-old managed to crack the top 30 but couldn’t maintain a steady heading. She now ranks #42 in the singles ranking.
In her last few tournaments, Putintseva has been beaten mainly in the early rounds and many of those losses have come at the hands of lower-ranked players. That said, Putintseva has got some winning experience against many top 10 players and as a three-time major quarterfinalist, she has the goods to win the title here.

Galfi Relies on Home Momentum
22-year-old Dalma Galfi will definitely fancy her chances of reaching the final. After all, she arrived in Budapest after reaching the final in the ITF Contrexeville last week, losing to Anhelina Kalinina.
Similarly, in June, Galfi was a finalist in the ITF Denain and this time, she went the distance. Apart from this, the Hungarian was also the runner-up in another ITF event earlier this year.
All these tournaments were clay ones; it is quite evident that Galfi has built herself quite a bit of form and momentum on this surface. Combine that with the home advantage, it becomes clearer as to why it isn’t too surprising to see her in the semis here.
In the first round, she beat Aliona Bolsova while in the second, she moved past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. In the quarterfinal, Galfi defeated Olga Danilovic in straight sets to make it to her first semifinal on the WTA Tour.
Putintseva v Galfi Prediction and Tip
Putintseva will start as the favourite but Galfi, despite ranking some 130 places behind her opponent, looks primed to deliver the upset and continue her brilliant run. This can go either way but we are certainly in for an entertaining match.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
